Great (non toy) gift ideas for kids! 11-2015

http://m.huffpost.com/us/entry/6108036

18 Non-Toy Gifts for Children
1. Classes. Music, dance, riding, drawing -- classes are a great way to encourage children in their interests and let them know that you pay attention to them and what they enjoy.
2. Memberships. Zoo, science museum, children's museum, YMCA membership, etc. These are particularly great for family gifts! Many young families want to enjoy day outings, but affording them can be a challenge, so give them the gift of a yearly membership.
3. Subscriptions. Kids enjoy getting things in the mail. Why not encourage their reading by getting them a magazine subscription for something they are interested in!
4. Events. Movie tickets, or tickets to a play, concert or sports event are really exciting! Having an event to look forward to makes the rest of life more enjoyable.
5. Activities. Mini golf, bowling, skating rink. These are so much fun! And a big part of the fun is going together. Children love spending time with the adults in their lives; they want to see you enjoying your time as well as enjoying them.
6. Recipe and Ingredients. Kids love cooking with their parents. Baking something special or cooking dinner is an ideal time to spend together and learn life skills. Print out a recipe, purchase all the ingredients and set a date for cooking together.
7. Crafting Date. Our daughter loves making crafts. I do, too; I really do enjoy the creative aspect. But I rarely take time out to do it with her. These crafting dates mean the world to our creative little girl. Keep a basket of craft supplies and get out a book for inspiration. We like Sneaky Art: Crafty Surprises to Hide in Plain Sight, by Marthe Jocelyn.
8. Arts and Crafts supplies. If your craft box is running low, stock up a little on things you need. Add in something fun the kids haven't used before. A gift of arts and crafts supplies often brings on the imagination, and kids can't wait to get to work!
9. Coupons. An envelope of coupons that they can "spend" at any time: I'll do one chore -- no questions asked; movie and popcorn night, you pick the movie!; 1:1 game of cards or basketball (whatever the child's interest is in); sit and read a book with me; stay up 1/2 hour past bedtime.
10. Restaurant Gift Card. Dinner, ice cream, coffee, cupcake -- whatever suits their fancy! Give them the freedom of inviting whomever they wish: it may be mom or dad; it may be a grandparent, aunt or even teacher they would like to spend more time with.
11. Dress-Up Clothes. These do need to be limited, but two dresses and a couple play silks can get hours and hours of play!
12. Books. We get a lot of books from the library, but there are some that I just can't find there, or it takes us longer to read through. We have read through the entire Little House series, Narnia, and are working our way through Shel Silverstein's books. Be sure to pass the books on when you are done, so they don't clutter up your home.
13. Clothes. When kids only have a certain amount of clothes, they often enjoy getting clothes. Make it a point to get something that fits their style. That may mean Western clothes, superhero, fancy dresses, etc.
14. Snacks. If your child is a foodie, they will love this! Some homemade granola or cookies made just for them is a special treat!
15. Outdoor Supplies. If you are an outdoorsy family, giving kids their own fishing tackle or gardening equipment can be a big deal. It's also something that gets left on the shelf in the garage, so you always know right where to find it.
16. Telling Time. Many children these days don't know how to read analog, or find it takes too long to think about it, so they search for a digital watch. Getting them a cool watch makes them want to be able to tell time on it. Boys, girls, and even teenagers can be excited about this.
17. Games and Puzzles. Games and puzzles are great activities for when kids have to be indoors. It's a good practice to have individual quiet times during the day, and having a puzzle to sit and work on by themselves helps brain development and problem solving skills. Games teach a lot, too! My kids talk about how they passed geography, just because we played Risk when they were little. Monopoly and Payday have been popular and help cement math skills. Memory games are great for younger children.
18. Calendar. Many children like to know what is going on, what day it is, how many days until ____. These kids are the ones who want to know what the plan is for the day, the order in which things will happen, what time friends are expected over, etc. They struggle with spur-of-the-moment and can be frustrating if you are a spontaneous parent. But celebrate it! These children have many strengths, and make our world run more smoothly. :-) Embrace their inner schedule and get them their own calendar. They can write down their own classes, appointments, playdates, etc. And if they ask you, send them to their calendar so they can get used to being in control of their own schedule. You can even schedule "spontaneous days," so they know that something different will happen that day. Trust me, it will help them enjoy the spontaneous outings!

Phoebe's updated wishlist for 2014

Nov 24, 2014
With Phoebe's 9th birthday coming up, as well as Christmas, I figured it would be helpful to give everyone a heads up on her current sizes and her likes, wants, needs.
  • Isabelle American Girl Doll accessories, outfits.  The doll is 18" and they sell outfits and accessories that are not made by American Girl, which are less expensive.
  • Shoes -size 12 (needs new boots, tennis shoes, casual shoes to wear with skirts, she likes shoes with little heels - guess they're called pumps, she doesn't wear them to school but will wear them when dressing up)
  • Dresses - size 6
  • Tops - Size 5/6 or go with 6
  • Bottoms - size 5. (She doesn't really like to wear jeans, so bootcut / yoga type pants are best)
  • Anything from Justice! They frequently have sales for 40% off entire store. That's the time to go.
  • Anything with her name or the letter P. Someone has purchased a bracelet with her initial on it.
  • She loves mood jewelry.
  • Birthstone jewelry (December birthstone).
  • She likes pajama sets, but she doesn't wear the pants often, she prefers short sleeves / sleeveless and shorts. Justice has 3 piece sets.
  • Frozen Watch.  Someone has purchased this for her, as of 11/25/14.
  • Stuffed Animals (She collects Ty babies, she has the smaller ones. She has a bunch of Ty babies but not many beanie boos (the mini ones).
  • She has an Xbox 360 with the Kinect. She doesn't have many games for it. She does have Just Dance 2014 & Dance Central. She enjoys the Kinect Adventures so any sports games would be good.
  • Books! She has to read 30 minutes a day and she's read all of her books more than once.
  • Bedding - sheets, pillowcases, blanket - twin sized bed.
  • She loves nail art and lately has wanted to have her hair curly. So possibly some foam curler sticks would be fun for her... nail polish, nail decals, anything to do with nail art. Someone has purchased the nail art and foam curler sticks for her, as of 12/8/14.
  • She loves cheetah print, Frozen, journals, anything to do with animals, shirts with animals on them, crazy socks, earrings, bracelets, anything with a schnauzer (like Jack).
  • Gift Cards - She has an ipad, so itunes gift cards are good, American Girl, Justice and Game Stop gift cards are fun for her as well. She also likes to go to Target (I think its because of their yummy popcorn at the snack bar, lol).
  • Remote control cars (she likes to harass Jack with them, He chases after them barking, lol.
  • Nerf Rebelle Agent Bow Someone has purchased this for her, as of 12/9/14.
  • Movies - Malificent, How to Train Your Dragon 2, Mrs. Doubtfire, Guardians of the Galaxy, Frozen Sing-a-Long
  • She's also a swimmer now and will need new bathing suits for next summer. May be a good time to buy with things on clearance. If so, I'd go with a size 6 or 7.
  • She's been playing outside with a friend alot lately, so any outdoor activity things are good.

Phoebe's Wish List ... 2013

Since many ask me what does Phoebe like, what does she want for her birthday and for Christmas, I try to update this at least once a year with her likes and wants. As of today, 9/6/13, her sizes are: Shoes - size 11 Dresses & Tops - 5/6 or Small Bottoms (shorts, skirts, pants) - X-Small 4 or if Children's Place, Size 5/6 She is asking to do a Hello Kitty theme in her room (probably just for you MawMaw Tessie Teapot!) Any kind of gadget / stuffed animal thinga-ma-jiggy that gets shown on tv. And I'm sure you all know how much she adores stuffed animals. But nothing too big please, we only have so much room. And she knows and remembers every single one. If you buy pajamas, try to get the set with short sleeves and shorts, she gets really hot during the night... even though its freezing in this house!

Gift Ideas for Annette

I can never think of anything easy that I'd like, but I always have that aha moment after. I was shopping at Hobby Lobby for Phoebe's upcoming birthday party and I would love to have anything/everything Wilton! I just bought a cake pops pan and I'm exploring ideas on Wilton.com. The fondant tools are what I'm currently looking at. The only thing I own as far as Wilton supplies go is their 101 cookie cutter set, Candy Melting Pro pot, the pops stand and cookie cooling rack. (I am posting this just as I'm thinking of it, I know my birthday and Christmas have passed, lol) http://www.wilton.com/store/site/ The idea books would be great too! We could possibly go broke if I bought all that I wanted from Wilton. :)

Wuggle Pets

She called them Wiggle Pets and I could not find anything on them. The commercial just came on and she almost fell out of her chair letting me know it was on. She's really got her eye on this. It's $19.99 plus $8 shipping. In case anyone is interested in getting this for her birthday or Christmas, here's the link:

https://www.wugglepets.com/

You may be able to find them in a store since they now carry "as seen on tv" stuff in the stores, which would save you the shipping charges. Just FYI. If you plan to get this, please email or text me so I can mark it off the list. :)

Sketchers - Bella Ballerina

Sketchers (or Skitchers as Phoebe calls them) came out with a ballerina shoe. It's a tennis shoe that has a round part on the bottom of the shoe that lets you spin - ballerina style :) She says "I wish I could have those" everytime the commercial comes on.

She also likes the Sketchers with the sparkly sequins on the top front that light up.

Currently she wears a size 9.

Here's a link to the style of shoe. http://www.amazon.com/Skechers-Ballerina-Princess-Sneaker-Little/dp/B004IARDFS

Phoebe's 2010 Wishlist

We've gone through a few catalogs and picked out some items to give everyone some gift ideas since her birthday and Christmas are coming up. Some other general ideas are money (which gets deposited into her account) and clothes (sizes listed below).

Shoes - depending on where you buy them, you should be fine getting anything between size 8 and 9.

Dresses and tops -Size XS in girls, yes she's moved into the big girl section! Size 4-6 if XS is not an option.

Skirts, Shorts - 4T if they have adjustable waist

     Pants - 4T

I've created a wishlist on one site of the items she picked out, and I'll post info on the others.

Tammy gave her a "make it yourself wand kit" and we had a "make it yourself tiara kit" which she really enjoyed. So that would be another option, any make it yourself kits that are age appropriate.

Hope all of this helps!
